Police officers discovered a man in his 40s or 50s dead after being shot multiple times on the south side of Waukegan Monday evening, authorities said.
The Waukegan Police Department received a report of gunshots fired around 11 p.m. Monday in the area of Lincoln Avenue and 9th Street in Waukegan.
Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Michael Mandro said officers arrived and found an injured victim.
The adult male appeared to be suffering from gunshot wounds.
The Waukegan Fire Department responded to the scene and attempted to provide medical assistance, Mandro said.
The victim was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office was notified and responded to take possession of the victim for an autopsy.
The coroner’s office is conducting an investigation to determine the cause and manner of death, Mandro said.
The coroner is also working to confirm the victim’s identity.
Mandro said the victim is believed to be a Hispanic male in his late 40s to early 50s.
His suspected identity is being withheld pending official confirmation and notification to his next of kin.
The incident remains under investigation by the Waukegan Police Department.
The suspected homicide — if confirmed by the coroner’s office — would be Waukegan’s second homicide of the year. It is believed to be the ninth homicide of the year in Lake County, according to county data.
In February, 58-year-old Ricardo Delafuente, of Waukegan, was fatally shot by police after reportedly arming himself with a machete and threatening officers in the 1000 block of Leith Avenue in Waukegan.
